Digital Dutch Language Portfolio

Edia is currently developing a Digitaal Dutch Language Portfolio for CINOP. Coming September CINOP will setup a pilot for this environment. Early 2011, the product will be taken into production.

Sakai Commercial Affiliate Program

Recently, Edia became a member of the Sakai Foundation Commercial Affiliate Program. By joining this program Edia is supporting the Foundation's work, the development of Sakai, and to directly contribute to Open Source technological innovations for higher education.

Edia develops Gradebook for CSU

Last summer, Charles Sturt University (CSU) hired Edia to develop a Gradebook tool for Sakai. This tool is still in design and will feature some features specifically designed for CSU. Based on CSU's functional design Edia has designed to develop a completely new tool, rather than making adjustments to the old design.
Some of the unique features of the tool are:

Junior java developer

Edia is looking for a junior java developer.

Edia is a young, and fast growing company. Therefore we are looking for a full-time junior java developer. At Edia you will find an informal, flat, oranization where there are lots of opportunities to learn and develop youself.

Affinity with ICT in education is a must. Knowledge of J2EE, Spring, Hibernate, MySQL, Oracle a plus.

Senior java developer

Edia is looking for a senior java developer.

Edia is a young, and fast growing company. Therefore we are looking for a senior Java developer who is looking for challenging work on large open source enterprise architectures. You will also be working on Edia's state-of-the art adaptive language learning applications.

Affinity with ICT in education is a must.

We are looking for someone with at least five years java development experience and who has extentive knowledge of J2EE, Spring, Hibernate, mysql en oracle.

Knowledge of machine learning, language technology (NLP) and/or information retrieval is a pre.

Creating your own GroupProvider in Sakai

In Sakai, the GroupProvider provides user / role membership in a group, from an external system. We are currently involved in a project that implements GroupProvider to allow the members of a federated administration workspace to manage the worksites created inside that federated administration worksite. More on that in future posts. Here I'd like to briefly give a few pointers about implementing your own GroupProvider.

In de Alane Suite berekenen we de moeilijkheid van tekst op basis van hoe vaak de woorden in de tekst voorkomen. Een tekst met alleen veelvoorkomende woorden is gemakkelijker dan een tekst met weinig voorkomende woorden. Hierop baseren wij de berekening van de moeilijkheid van teksten voor de Alane Nieuwslezer. Het woord "de" is makkelijker dan het woord "allengs". Het eerste woord komt vaker voor, dus kom je het vaker tegen, dus is de kans dat je weet wat het betekent groter. Dat is dus de theorie, en in de praktijk blijkt dat prima te werken.

In a project sponsored by a digital pioneers grant of Netherlands Knowledgeland software from Edia's ALANE suite is used to help immigrants with learning Dutch vocabulary used in today's newspaper articles.
